Touring Yunnan · Looking at Vietnam | Youth Shines Brightly in the Clash of Cultures
Recently, 23 students from Hanoi Open University visited Kunming. During their 30-day journey, they explored Yunnan and gained a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture.
The three-story building located at 89-93 Hoa Son Nam Street, Ngu Hoa District, was once the residence and revolutionary base of President Ho Chi Minh from February to October 1940 in Kunming. Chu Mai Loan, a student at Hanoi Open University, approached the glass, stopped, and intently looked at the historical photos hanging on the wall, sharing with emotion: "The white suit that Uncle Ho wore has appeared many times. Each photo reminds us of the efforts of our predecessors for their ideals, and makes me feel the deep friendship between Vietnam and China."
Next to that old residence is the "Nam Lai Thinh" coffee shop. Here, Nguyen Thi Anh was drawn to two old photos: one is a black-and-white picture of the coffee shop in the past, and the other is a photo of Prime Minister Chu An Lai and President Ho Chi Minh sitting next to each other – a precious moment preserved. This place was once a location where President Ho Chi Minh carried out his revolutionary activities under the guise of a baker. Today, although the shop's address has changed many times, the aroma of Vietnamese bread and coffee still lingers. Nguyen Thi Anh shared: "I never expected to be able to enjoy a bread similar to the one President Ho used to eat in Yunnan."
Students visited cultural venues such as the former site of Southwest Associated University and the Yunnan Railway Museum, and also went to Shilin and Fuxian Lake National Wetland Park. Vietnamese student Nguyen Van Thuan excitedly shared: "Shilin in Kunming is the filming location of 'Journey to the West' that I watched as a child. The scenery on TV is actually right before my eyes!"
Young people have visited many cultural sites such as the Southwest University of Science and Technology campus, the Yunnan Railway Museum, and scenic spots like the Shilin Stone Forest and the Fenghuang Lake National Wetland Park. Student Nguyen Van Sam excitedly shared: "The stone forest in Kunming is exactly the setting in the Journey to the West movie I watched when I was a child. The scene on TV is now right in front of my eyes!"
The journey does not stop at finding history.
Ha Thi Ngoc Bich listed her May experiences, such as learning tea ceremony, ancient đàn tranh, bamboo flute, paper cutting art, Tai Chi, and enjoying specialties like bún qua cầu and bánh hoa. She also shared these things with her friends on social media.
Young Vietnamese people are enthusiastically introducing famous places in Vietnam such as Hoa Lo Prison and Temple of Literature, and hope that more Chinese friends will come to visit. They hope that youth will continue to shine in the cultural exchange between China and Vietnam.
