On November 5, 1981, Kunming and Fujisawa, Japan established the first pair of international friendship cities in Yunnan.Today, we follow Nie Er's violin across the ocean and review the journey of friendship between Kunming and Fujisawa.

Nie Er was born in Kunming, Yunnan Province in 1912.He spent the most precious 18 years of his life here.In early 1931, he spent his hard-earned honorarium on a second-hand violin.Since then, this violin has always been by his side, becoming a close companion in his musical career and a sacred instrument that shaped him as a musician of the people.

In early 1935, Nie Er went to Japan to study and composed the "March of the Volunteers." At an artistic gathering of Chinese students in Japan, Nie Er performed this piece for the first time with his violin. Unfortunately, that performance became his eternal masterpiece. Later, while swimming in the Kugenuma sea in Fujisawa, young Nie Er tragically drowned at the age of 23.


As time goes by, Kunming and Fujisawa continue the friendship between cities in different ways.Since Kunming and Fujisawa established sister cities for more than 40 years, the two places have had close exchanges.The two sides exchanged delegations for friendly visits, jointly commemorated Nie Er, held the "Kunming·Fujisawa Cultural Exchange Exhibition", etc., and conducted in-depth friendly exchanges in the fields of culture, industry and commerce, and medical care.

As time goes by, in-depth exchanges were conducted in culture, economy and health care for over four decades.The two sides have sent delegations for friendly visits, commemorated Nie Er together, and jointly held the Kunming-Fujisawa Cultural Exchange Exhibition.

In 2002, to commemorate the friendship between the two cities of Nie Er and Kunming, the Kunming Municipal Government sent an engineering team to build a "Spring Garden" for Fujisawa.

On the pillars of the Chengbi Pavilion, the couplet reads, “Breezes pass through the small pavilion with bamboo shadows on the ground; clouds float above the tides with the violin melodies sounding around.'”

This heartfelt couplet reflects the profound connection between Nie Er, Kunming and Fujisawa. Kunming also donated a large bronze peacock sculpture titled 'Eternal Harmony' created by the painter and sculptor Yuan Xiaocen. Symbolizing peace and development, the sculpture is placed in the park.
